Taghkanic Board approves Livingston Road chip seal, truck purchase and moves to close Craryville bridge
Summary
The Town Board approved a $35,540 chip-seal contract for Livingston Road, authorized purchase of a highway pickup for $51,250 and directed staff to notify residents that the Craryville Road bridge will likely be closed and turned into a cul-de-sac rather than repaired.

The Taghkanic Town Board approved multiple highway items at its Aug. 12 meeting, including a $35,540 quote from Valley Paving to chip-seal Livingston Road and the purchase of a 2024 Ford F350 SD XL pickup for $51,250.
Highway Superintendent Eric Gaylord presented the Livingston Road quote; the Board approved the contract on a motion by Linda Mirabelli, seconded by Perry Ascher. On the truck purchase, Gaylord said the utility pickup is needed for small jobs to avoid wear on the dump truck. The Board approved purchasing the Marchese Ford bid on a motion by Doug Craig, seconded by Elisabeth Albert.
Gaylord also presented a $52,891 Town & County Bridge & Rail quote to repair the collapsed Craryville Road bridge but recommended against repair, saying, “It is my opinion that we save the money, and construct a Cul-de-sac.” The Board directed staff to inform affected residents and prepare a letter explaining the plan; Supervisor Ryan Skoda said he will consult Chief Hilscher about emergency access and report back next month.
The Board further authorized Town Attorney Andrew Howard to begin the legal process to abandon 0.4 miles of New Forge Road to property owner Fran Murcott, a separate highway action approved 5–0.
What’s next: the Board will notify residents about the Craryville plan and seek input from emergency services before finalizing access arrangements.
