Sweet Home board approves settlements in three Child Victims Act cases, moves to amend budget and authorize borrowing

The Sweet Home Central School District Board of Education authorized settlement expenditures in three civil actions filed under New York’s Child Victims Act and approved budget and borrowing steps to pay for those settlements.

Board materials list the New York State Supreme Court index numbers and recommended settlement amounts as follows: 810761/2021 — $75,000; 810987/2021 — $1,500,000; 811174/2021 — $350,000. The superintendent and legal counsel recommended the settlements to avoid the time, cost and risk of further litigation; the board authorized district officials to execute necessary documents to effect the settlements.

To pay the settlements, the board found the payments to be an unexpected ordinary contingent expense and amended the 2025–26 budget by increasing appropriations by $2,000,000. The board also adopted a bond resolution authorizing the issuance of serial bonds or other obligations not to exceed $2,000,000 to finance the district's cost of the settlements and delegated authority to issue notes and bonds to the board president.

The minutes record the settlement amounts and separately state the district will finance up to $2,000,000 by borrowing. The listed settlement amounts add to $1,925,000; board documents and motions reference $2,000,000 as the budget amendment and maximum borrowing authorization, leaving a $75,000 planning margin in the authorization language. The Superintendent and Board President were authorized to sign documents necessary to implement the settlements.
