Sweet Home board asks voters to extend Maplemere modular-classroom lease; reaffirms SEQRA finding

The Sweet Home Central School District Board of Education voted to place a proposition on the district’s May 19, 2026 budget and board-election ballot to extend the lease for modular temporary classrooms at Maplemere Elementary for an additional two-year period, from Nov. 1, 2026, through Oct. 31, 2028, at a cost of $2,205 per month for a total of $52,920.
Board materials state the modular building — two classrooms installed during the COVID-19 period — has been used for intervention periods and to accommodate unexpected enrollment increases. The resolution presented to the board says the extension "is in the District’s best interests, including because the extension of the existing lease agreement provides the District with cost-effective flexibility to respond to current unexpected enrollment increases." The board resolved that voter approval will be required to authorize payment from general funds.
The board also reviewed State Environmental Quality Review Act materials and reaffirmed prior determinations that the modular classrooms constitute a "Type II action which is not subject to review under SEQRA," finding no significant adverse impacts on the environment from continuing the building’s use. The resolution authorizes the superintendent to sign and file any documents necessary to comply with SEQRA.
The proposition will appear at the district’s annual budget vote and board election on May 19, 2026. If voters approve the addendum, district officials said they will use general-fund resources to pay the monthly lease as described in the resolution.
