Fire Chief Richie Evans asked the board to consider changing the fire department's minimum volunteer age from 21 to 18, saying many volunteer departments accept 18‑year‑olds and the change would help build a recruitment pipeline.
"Many volunteer departments are 18 years old," Evans said, adding that lowering the age would create an opportunity "to get younger kids who are interested in the career." President Richard Samples said he would consult Attorney Roland Cross and insurance carriers to evaluate legal and coverage questions before any policy change.
Trustees agreed the matter required legal review and did not take immediate action at the meeting.
