Board advances Maplemere modular-classroom lease extension to May ballot, affirms SEQRA review

The Sweet Home Board voted on Jan. 22 to seek voter approval of an addendum to extend the existing lease for modular temporary classrooms at Maplemere Elementary School for an additional two-year period, from Nov. 1, 2026 through Oct. 31, 2028, at $2,205 per month (total $52,920).
Board materials and the motion note the modular building was installed in 2021 with federal stimulus funds and is approximately 1,850 square feet (two classrooms). The board found the lease extension provides cost-effective flexibility to respond to unexpected enrollment increases and authorized placement of the proposition on the District’s May 19, 2026 annual budget vote and board election so that voters may authorize payment from general funds.
Separately, the board reaffirmed its prior State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA) finding that the installation/use of the modular building is a Type II action (less than 10,000 sq. ft.) and that continued use and the lease extension will not result in significant adverse environmental impacts. The board also authorized the superintendent to sign and file any documents necessary to comply with SEQRA.
