Residents press Connersville leaders for protections during data center moratorium

A Connersville resident asked the City Council on Aug. 3 whether the town’s 10-month moratorium and ongoing zoning rewrite will protect Connersville and Fayette County if a data center is proposed. "Is everything that we're doing in this 10 month moratorium going to protect Connersville and Fayette County?" said Angie Rop, who identified herself as a "concerned citizen," and asked for town-hall style outreach and opportunities for public comment.
Council leaders and city staff responded that the moratorium’s purpose is to create rules before any project can move forward. The chair said, "That is the whole point of the moratorium," and a staff member explained the difference between a public meeting and a public hearing under Indiana rules, stressing that an ordinance change will require a public hearing where citizens have the right to speak. A separate city presenter told residents there is currently "no project, no developers in any way, shape, or form" under discussion and encouraged citizens to volunteer for a citizens committee and to request to be put on the agenda for more direct involvement.
