Council hears competing claims over Stevenson Road abandonment, pauses action

A proposed road-closure plat for a portion of Stevenson Road prompted competing claims from property owners at the Sept. 9 Coffee City council meeting. Applicant Mike Aubuchon said the gravel road is abandoned since a bridge was closed in 1961–62 and that abandonment traces to the subdivision where the road originated. Resident Mr. Susewind said he needs the access to reach a lower portion of his lot and to allow his handicapped wife to use the boat dock; he said he had previously sought a right-of-way and had the road surveyed in 2018.
The exchange included disagreement over whether the abandoned strip—would revert to particular lot owners, with Aubuchon saying subdivision approvals and previous county action limit who can receive the property. Mayor Jeff Blackstone interrupted the heated back-and-forth and said the city would undertake additional due diligence and consult the city attorney before any formal action. No motion to close the road was taken at the meeting.
