Trustees hear update on threat assessments; staff conducting pre-assessments

Chief Walters said staff have completed about four or five pre-assessments this school year and most did not require full threat assessments; he urged reminders to students not to use violent terms on campus.
Chief Walters told trustees the district conducts pre-assessments when students mention bodily harm or threats. "We've done, 4 or 5 pre assessments, which everyone have come out to where we don't need to do a full blown threat assessment," he said. Walters said most incidents were students being reckless in speech rather than credible threats.
Walters emphasized that staff will continue to remind students they cannot use words such as "gun, knife, shoot, bomb" on campus and that some contacts result in precautionary steps even when a full threat assessment is not required. The board received the update as informational; no new policy was adopted during the meeting.
