The Jenison Board of Education on Sept. 8 approved using roughly $120,000 remaining from a 35j literacy grant to purchase classroom and library books, voting 6-1 (NAY: Shannon Hogan).
Assistant Superintendent/Director of Finance Christine Marcy told the board the district is moving to spend remaining grant funds before the Sept. 30, 2025 expiration so materials arrive on time for staff and students. Teaching and Learning presented a master list of recommended titles based on teacher requests, curriculum fit and age appropriateness. Marcy thanked Alana Kooi for grant work that secured funds. Board members noted parents should have access to information about materials students read in class.
The motion passed 6-1. Staff will place orders to meet grant deadlines and provide parents the ability to review purchased materials.
