Area-planning staff told commissioners they are preparing for possible data-center development and proposed hiring an outside consultant to draft an AI data-centers ordinance and lead public-review meetings.
The staff member said the consultant’s fee sheet lists a $5,000 lump sum to draft the ordinance, $625 per public meeting and $125 per hour for additional services. "Let's try to come in at the round or just a little under $10,000," the staff member said when discussing a funding estimate for the work and the number of meetings that would be required. Commissioners agreed a steering committee should be involved and that funding would likely need to be requested from the county council.
No appropriation was approved at the meeting. Staff said they would coordinate with the steering committee, refine a budget request and present it to the county council during upcoming budget discussions.
