The Newport Historic District Commission approved multiple staff‑recommended applications at its Oct. 14 meeting, adopting minutes from Sept. 15 and accepting staff findings of fact for the evening’s docket. Several largely uncontroversial applications — including projects at 37 Elm St., 30 Walnut St., and 21 Clay St. — were adopted on summary motions with aye votes recorded.
Other routine approvals included a condition on 29 John Street that the replaced front stairs be fitted with a wrought‑iron railing, and the condition that Hardie board siding at 353 Gibbs Ave be installed vertically rather than horizontally. The commission also conditionally approved a standing‑seam metal roof at 1 Wetmore Ave, asking the applicant to provide a final cut sheet to the preservation planner for staff sign-off. "Painted equipment does not achieve the seamless look," the planner told the commission regarding visibility concerns in a different application.
The meeting’s most significant procedural outcomes were a split decision on 8 Beacon Hill Road (east elevation and pool approved; garage design continued to Nov. 10 for redesign) and continuations of the T‑Mobile LLC antenna application at 1 Bellevue Ave and multiple window replacement applications until applicants deliver additional information or alternatives. The commission set Nov. 10 as the next regular meeting date for continued matters.
