Academy ISD reviews policy implications of 89th Legislature; device ban and UIL issues flagged

Superintendent Darla Nolen summarized key K–12 items from the 89th Texas Legislature at the June 25 board meeting and outlined follow-up steps the district will need to take. She said HB 2 provides salary template adjustments that will raise pay for teachers in years three through five and for teachers with five or more years of experience; other staff raises are not mandated. Nolen said the district is reviewing HB 1481, which bans personal student devices during the school day and permits only school-issued devices on campus, and that the Student Code of Conduct will need revision to align with the law.
Nolen also mentioned SB 401, which has prompted regional discussion about homeschool student participation in UIL events and will come to the board next month for a vote, and SB 2929, which allows removal of spectators by referees or school officials at extracurricular events without first issuing a verbal warning. Board members asked staff to prepare required policy edits and bring recommendations back for formal action.
