A committee member reported that the Oversight Board met and recommended a 0.4% sales tax to fund a new jail and its operations to the Board of County Commissioners. The advisory committee discussed a newspaper article that mentioned the 'Karen' jail site and sought clarification on whether county staff or outside entities had been discussing that location.
"They did meet, and, they made a recommendation to the Board of County commissioners, on the 0.4, sales tax for the new jail and its operations, including the BCC," a speaker said. Committee members said they had not taken up the Karen-site matter in committee and were unaware of formal discussions with outside entities about moving the site.
Members asked staff to clarify whether any county offices or outside entities had pursued separate discussions about alternate sites; staff and the chair said they were not aware of such discussions and that the oversight committee itself had not considered site selection. No formal decision or site change was made in the meeting.
