The East Orange Board of Health reviewed a preliminary Community Health Assessment (CHA) at its April 21 meeting and raised concerns that the response pool may not have been large enough to be fully representative.
Members said the length and complexity of the CHA questionnaire likely reduced participation and recommended that outreach for the community health improvement plan be made more accessible and engaging. Director Valencia Maponya noted the CHA’s findings generally aligned with known concerns but acknowledged the need to broaden participation.
Director Maponya framed the work within a broader vision for the Department: "Her vision was to position the Health Department as one of the strongest departments in Essex County and, ultimately, in New Jersey." Board members said improved community engagement would be critical to realizing that goal.
