East Orange Board of Health approves minutes, outlines priorities for staffing and outreach

The East Orange Board of Health convened April 21 and unanimously approved the March 17, 2026 meeting minutes before turning to departmental priorities and outreach.
Board President Christine Harris opened the meeting and reviewed public‑meeting procedures. The Board confirmed a quorum of five members and heard updates from Director Valencia Maponya on a range of programs and planning efforts.
The Board pressed for greater staffing stability to manage grant work and recommended promoting an existing program specialist into a program manager role to protect lead‑related funding. Director Maponya said the Department has advanced lead grant work while a key program‑management position remains vacant.
Members also focused on public visibility and outreach, noting the Health Department had not been consistently represented in City materials and the State of the City presentation. President Harris said public health “often went unnoticed until it became immediately necessary,” urging the Department and Council to improve public information and communications.
The meeting closed with a recognition for Dr. Tonya X. Cook and a reminder from President Harris that Board members must complete required financial disclosures by the stated deadline. President Harris adjourned the meeting at 7:18 p.m.
