Parks director urges continued partial closure of Gallup golf course to protect turf recovery

Parks and Recreation Director Vince Alonzo told the council on March 10 that photos taken in February and again 27 days later show visible improvement on golf-course greens but that long-term turf survival requires continued rest and careful irrigation management.
Alonzo recommended continued partial closure and described technical needs including rest periods for greens and irrigation improvements; he said the driving range remains restricted to Gallup-McKinley County student golf teams and a broader public reopening would be contingent on site conditions. "I encourage anyone with concerns to contact me directly," Alonzo said, and acknowledged Superintendent Eric Yazzie for maintenance work.
Council members discussed water conservation options, including replacing noncritical turf with xeriscape plantings and the total number of sprinkler heads; no funding vote was taken at the meeting.
