Organizers press board for rural magnet program as superintendent readies survey

Matthew White, a local community organizer, told the board the proposed Ratham Creek magnet program is "more than a school initiative" and urged trustees to stop talking about equity and start acting: "If not now, then when?" He framed the program as a corrective investment to ensure rural students receive the same opportunities as students in other parts of the consolidated district.
Superintendent Dr. Gary told trustees the district will release a community magnet survey on Thursday, Aug. 13, running through Aug. 31, and will email it to parents and employees with email addresses on file; hard copies will also be available at school offices. He also said an academic program study has begun this week to review course catalogs and provide recommendations on equitable program access across high and middle schools, with results expected by mid-September or early October.
