Town holds first reading on adopting 2024 International Fire Code; final adoption scheduled for late September

Deputy Chief and Fire Marshal Jeff Webb explained that, under state special-district statute, fire districts adopt the fire code and municipalities ratify or incorporate it into their municipal codes; he described the code as "an odd duck" because the district adopts and towns typically ratify by reference.
Webb said Mountain View adopted the code in February and that staff coordinated local amendments so the town's ordinance will align with district policies; he noted the code contains conditional 'if-then' clauses to accommodate differing jurisdictions' tolerance for requirements like residential sprinklers. No public comments were offered at the hearing. The council was told the adoption will proceed as a second reading at the Sept. 28 meeting to satisfy state notice requirements.
