Los Lunas declares extreme drought and restricts fireworks ahead of Fourth of July

Fire Chief John Gabaldon presented and the council adopted Resolution 26-10 declaring extreme or severe drought conditions and imposing fireworks restrictions, prohibiting certain types of fireworks and limiting where permissible fireworks may be used.
The Board of Trustees adopted Resolution 26-10 on June 11, declaring extreme or severe drought within the Village and imposing fireworks restrictions permitted under state law. Fire Chief John Gabaldon said sustained dry conditions, low humidity and dry vegetation increased fire risk and warranted the restrictions.
The resolution prohibits sale and use of higher-risk fireworks — including missile-type rockets, helicopters, aerial spinners, stick-type rockets and ground audible devices — and limits permitted consumer fireworks to paved or barren areas with a readily accessible water source. The resolution also prohibits all fireworks in designated wildland areas and establishes safety requirements for public displays conducted by or on behalf of the Village. The council approved the resolution on a 3–0 vote.
Chief Gabaldon encouraged residents to attend the Village’s public Fourth of July fireworks display as a safer alternative to personal fireworks use during drought conditions.
