City to pursue ADA-compliant curb ramps and crosswalks at Court & State using CDBG funds
Summary

The Transportation Committee reviewed a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG)-funded project to replace curb ramps and crosswalks at the Court and State intersection to meet current ADA standards.
Chair Klobfelter described a design-build delivery that will permit close coordination between engineer and contractor to address challenging slopes, drainage and adjacent private buildings. Ramps will be concrete with a one-foot concrete apron to stabilize turning radii and the crosswalks will use a concrete base topped with uniform brick in the city's traditional color to balance historic preservation concerns with accessibility. Mayor Patterson supported the plan and emphasized the construction window (between Thanksgiving and Ohio University's spring semester in January 2027) and the need for careful engineering to avoid slumping bricks.
Committee members welcomed the project and asked staff to consider repurposing removed bricks for other public uses (for example, at Athens High School). No objections were raised to placing the project on next week's first-reading agenda.
