The Essex Junction City Council unanimously approved a comprehensive community engagement plan on Wednesday after a presentation by the city’s communications director.
Ashley, the city’s communications director, opened the discussion by reviewing six months of rebranding work, the committee orientation program, and a three-part engagement framework staff propose to use for future projects. "So this is my brief to the council, basically, looking at the past 6 months and looking forward to the next 6 months," she told the council and described a goals-and-actions section the staff will convert into department work plans.
Councilors pressed on how the plan assigns roles between staff and elected officials; one member said council involvement in outreach is expected but not always spelled out, and staff replied the engagement toolkit can be adjusted year to year and built into specific project work plans. The council discussed practical next steps including ADA updates to the website and annual committee training tied to the plan.
The motion to approve the engagement plan was moved, seconded, and carried without opposition. Staff said they will incorporate the plan into FY28 work plans and begin rolling out the toolkit and public events identified in the document.
