Coffey County approves Kansas Mesonet station at county airport

The Coffey County Board of Commissioners on Aug. 10 unanimously authorized the chairman to sign an agreement allowing Kansas State University’s Weather Data Library to install a Kansas Mesonet weather station on county property at the Coffey County Airport.
The board discussed whether the station would require county funding or interfere with airport platting and construction. The Chair said the Mesonet provides “real time and long term weather and climate data” and that data access “is free for public use and download.” Commissioners asked whether the station would affect airport projects; staff and the presenter confirmed the station would sit on the southeast side of the airport and would not impose a county cost.
The motion to authorize the chairman to sign the station agreement passed 5–0. County staff said the Mesonet station would improve local weather and climate information available to residents, farmers and emergency managers. The board did not commit county funding for installation or maintenance; the agreement assigns installation and data provision to Kansas State University’s Weather Data Library.
