Road work, chip-and-seal payment and bridge access options dominate Jackson County road report

Road and Bridge Superintendent Joe Gardner reported several near-term projects and cost questions to the Jackson County commissioners on July 27. "Pavecraft is starting on the overlay for the roads on Aug. 3rd," Gardner said, and the board signed a purchase order for $152,250 — half of the county's payment for the 2026 chip-and-seal program.
Gardner presented two access options for the 94th bridge project with Shawnee County: add gravel to a minimum-maintenance road for local access at an estimated $81,375, or build a sho-fly at roughly $139,000. Commissioners asked Gardner and staff to investigate whether the county could complete the needed work more cheaply in-house. Shop Foreman Bryson Bain addressed contractor billing questions, explaining that a vehicle computer replacement increased the labor line item but that final labor charges were lower than originally quoted. Bain also reported that an apparent transmission failure turned out to be a loose back structure, reducing the projected repair cost by $2,500 from a $15,123 quote, and that performing John Deere track-hoe service in-house will save about $4,400.
