Residents press for flood resiliency as Highlands Together project moves to grant applications

Community volunteers updated the joint boards on Highlands Together (rebranded as 'Highlands Together We Build') and asked that their work be included in the minutes so projects remain on the public record. Alden Anderson (Speaker 17) said more than 300 residents participated in prioritizing projects, and volunteer teams are preparing grant applications to turn prioritized projects into realities.
A representative of the Highlands Community Flood Resiliency Project (Speaker 20) described community flood mapping that collected photos and testimony from past storms (including 1996, 2011 and the July 9, 2023 event). "Flooding is a major issue," Speaker 20 said, adding the mapping shows impacts across both village and town properties and urging officials to seek state and federal funding to protect public property and help homeowners implement mitigation. Residents recounted repeated damage to retaining walls and basements and advocated for structural options such as detention/retention ponds and improved coordination with county and state officials.
