Huron approves up to $95,000 contract to grind July storm debris

The Huron City Commission authorized the Solid Waste Department to enter a contract with Dakota Wood Grinding, not to exceed $95,000, to grind debris remaining from the July 2 storm. City staff presented volume estimates, a contractor schedule and plans for reuse or disposal of chips and large woody material.
A department superintendent said the crew estimated "about 26 and 500 cubic yards of unground branch and logs" at the consolidated site and that 75–95% of the material could be ground under the proposed contract. Staff told the commission that if two grinders can be on-site the work could take as little as 1.5 to 3 weeks; with one grinder it could take longer, but the work is expected to be finished well before October. The city also expects to set aside large logs for firewood processing and to offer chips to local users, with attention to FEMA revenue-reporting requirements.
Commissioners asked about the timeline for clearing the site prior to snow season; staff estimated the area should be cleared by about Oct. 15 if grinding and hauling proceed as planned. The commission moved, seconded and approved the contract authorization by roll-call vote.
