Plymouth Township Council voted unanimously Aug. 10 to hire two new police officers, approving the appointments of Zachary Palekkia and Kyle Islip and conducting swearing-in ceremonies.
Chairwoman moved the first motion to hire Zachary Palekkia, which Councilmember Nelson seconded and the roll‑call vote recorded all members in favor. Chief Mercati, speaking for the department, said Palekkia graduated from Montgomery County Municipal Police Academy on June 10, 2026, earned awards including the John McGowan scholarship and top marksman award, and will fill a vacancy created by recent retirements. The chair then invited District Justice Patrick Krause to preside over the swearing-in.
Later the council moved and approved the hiring of Kyle Islip; Monero made the motion and Nelson seconded. The chief told council Islip is ranked among the top candidates and is enrolled at Montgomery County Municipal Police Academy with an anticipated December 2026 graduation. The council again recorded a unanimous vote in favor and asked District Justice Krause to administer the oath. Family members of both officers attended the meeting as the council recognized the new hires.
The votes were routine roll calls with each named council member recorded as voting in favor; no council member spoke in opposition. The hires will fill two department vacancies and the chief noted the department has been conducting a large entry‑level written examination and certification process earlier this year.
