Events staff (Mikayla) outlined a restructuring of Bastrop's Mardi Gras downtown events: duplicate the Lost Pines Christmas layout, begin the day at 10:00 a.m. with an "umbrella" pedestrian parade led by a jazz band, operate two stages on Main Street throughout the day, include vendors and a gumbo cook‑off, and end with a headliner street dance following the evening parade on Jan. 31. Staff said permits will request a Chestnut closure from TxDOT for the event and that the Mardi Gras ball is scheduled for Jan. 30 at the Convention Center with tickets to go on sale soon.
"So what we're kind of putting on the table is to shift Mardi Gras to be a very similar layout to what we do for lighted Christmas parade... We'll start out with an actual pedestrian parade. It'll be an umbrella walking parade at 10AM," Mikayla said. Staff noted they are still compiling promotional materials and coordinating staging, police and vendor logistics.
Council approved the related permit/resolution as part of the consent agenda after questions about layout and signage were answered; city staff will finalize routing details and proceed with TxDOT permitting.
