Steger officials cite 90 water-main breaks as they prepare for 2026 rate discussion

Village President William Joyce told the Committee of the Whole on Aug. 18 that the village has recorded 90 water main breaks so far this year and is preparing to consider a water-rate increase in 2026 to help make the system financially sustainable. "This year, the Village of Steger has had 90 water main breaks," Joyce said, and he warned that the volume of lost water is increasing the cost of operating the municipal system.
Joyce said the village currently charges $2.42 for 100 cubic feet of water and, when combined with the Thorn Creek sewer charge, residents are effectively paying about $3.82 per 100 cubic feet. He said the water system is operating at a shortfall that staff have been covering in part by borrowing from the General Fund. Joyce said he is awaiting more detailed finance figures before proposing a specific increase and that the Village Water Committee, which will include outside water professionals, will resume meetings prior to the first Village Board meeting each month; the public is invited to attend. No rate change was adopted at the Aug. 18 meeting.
