Steger police cite 67 motorists during Speed Awareness Day; enforcement to continue

Police Chief Greg Smith reported to the Village of Steger Board of Trustees that officers stepped up enforcement during Speed Awareness Day and issued dozens of citations.
"I want to thank everyone for Speed Awareness Day, everyone in Steger seemed to do their part. Myself and the officers did write 41 state tickets, we wrote 13 warning tickets also for speeding. Thirteen other violations for a total of 67 citations," Smith said. He told the board the department will continue similar enforcement for the rest of the month.
The report was delivered during the department reports portion of the board's Aug. 4 meeting. The board did not take any formal action on policy changes at the meeting; the chief framed the enforcement as part of ongoing efforts to address speeding concerns raised by residents in public comment.
Mayor William Joyce and trustees did not propose a separate ordinance at the meeting; instead, the board accepted the chief's report and moved on to other agenda items.
