Commission reviews Vision Zero safety action plan after five‑year crash analysis

Stantec project manager Chris Benitez told the City Commission that the Safety Action Plan is a data‑driven effort to eliminate fatal and serious injury crashes in South Miami. “What we've done is we looked at 5 years of crash data across the city,” Benitez said, and explained that the plan prioritizes crash severity (fatal and incapacitating injury) and maps a high‑injury network to focus limited resources.
The presentation identified crash patterns concentrated around school dismissal and evening peak periods and recommended countermeasures ranging from protected left‑turn treatments to pedestrian and bicycle safety improvements. Benitez and commissioners agreed on additional public engagement and a timeframe to bring infrastructure and policy recommendations back to the commission around May. Staff said the plan is structured to support applications for federal and state implementation funding.
