Superintendent reports enrollment rise and outlines senior parking limits; board reviews driving policy

"There are 195 spots in that lot. 105 of them are for students and 90 are for teachers," the superintendent said when describing the senior lot. He said 63 senior parking passes have been issued so far and that the district counted 311 seniors in the graduating class.
Board members discussed enforcement and state driving rules cited in the meeting as "chapter 71, title 5, article 19," which the superintendent said requires drivers to be 17 to operate a vehicle alone; he said permitted exceptions include approved co-op work-study, state-approved evening high school and similar programs. The superintendent noted 88 students will turn 17 between September and December and that the district's spring orientation requirement for juniors is a condition for eligibility for a future senior parking pass.
Board members and staff emphasized the policy is rarely strictly enforced at present and that any change in enforcement would be selective. The board did not take formal action on parking policy at the meeting; discussion was informational and intended to clarify how available spaces will be allocated this year.
