Building official says permit system now flags historic properties for board review

The City's building official said the department has added a GIS layer to its permitting system to identify historic properties so those applications will be brought to the Historic Preservation Board for review.
"We do capture them now. We have a GIS system that we included a layer that includes all the historic property in the city," Rami Carrera said, explaining that older misses occurred when properties were not identified in the system. He told the board flagged permits will be routed to the historic board and staff are available to review draft language for any recommended changes.
Board members said the number of historic properties is relatively small and that routing flagged permits should not be overly burdensome. The building official added that routine maintenance without a permit may still escape review unless it is captured in the permitting system.
