NYSDOL uses PSEO to flag underemployment among recent SUNY and CUNY graduates

Chital Patel of the New York State Department of Labor described how the PSEO dataset can be used to examine postgraduation outcomes. Using the 2019–2021 cohorts for SUNY and CUNY schools, analysts counted the share of graduates in retail and accommodation/food services one year after graduation as a proxy for underemployment.
"So we found that overall, 15 percent of graduates from the SUNY and CUNY system wound up in one of those two industries a year after graduation," Patel said. She added that visual and performing arts and communication majors showed the highest shares in those industries, while health professions and engineering showed the lowest. Presenters cautioned that PSEO captures outcomes at specific time points and that results vary if graduates later obtain advanced degrees.
Why it matters: PSEO lets education and workforce partners see which industries graduates enter and median earnings by major, informing guidance counseling, program design and training investments.
