Commissioners sign nuisance‑abatement resolution for 2820 Nelsus Landing

Assistant county counselor Michael Hawthorne asked the board Aug. 10 to sign a resolution ordering abatement under the Riley County Nuisance Abatement Act for the property at 2820 Nelsus Landing, saying the nuisance had persisted and that the owner does not currently live at the property.
Hawthorne described the statutory process and said the owner will be served with a copy of the resolution and then will have 10 days to remove the nuisance himself or request a hearing or an extension. "From that point, he will have 10 days to remove the nuisance himself. Otherwise, we will be empowered to proceed with cleanup directly and then to bill him for the cost of that cleanup," Hawthorne said. He also noted the county would have authority to auction inoperable vehicles if they are not removed.
A commissioner moved to approve the resolution as presented; the board approved and signed resolution number 081026. Hawthorne told commissioners the county had identified vendors for junk removal and towing and that, if the owner does not pay cleanup costs within 60 days, the bill could be placed on the property's tax rolls.
