Parents and a teacher press Dorchester 02 on AI in schools, screen time and assessment practices

Anna Llewellyn, who identified herself as a DDU parent, asked the committee to consider limits on AI use in schools and to reduce screen time for youngest learners in the district's 1-to-1 device program. "I have spoken to so many parents, teachers, community members, students who all have a lot of concerns about AI in schools," she said.
A teacher who spoke in support described longstanding problems with the district's assessment practices: common assessments are not provided as copies to students, the teacher said, and reported multiple instances where automated grading produced errors. The teacher said, "I have tests that were completely marked wrong and had to be remarked a year later when I was finally allowed to see them," and asked what steps are available to permit students to take math tests on paper rather than on computers. Staff responded that common assessments are treated as district-owned instructional materials (distinct from standardized assessments) and that procedures for parent access exist in practice though the practice is not codified in policy.
No board action was recorded during the meeting to change device policies, testing formats or grading procedures; parents and teachers asked staff to consider further review.
