School nutrition director showcases Farm-to-School activities, leads apple ‘crunch’

Heather Yutze, the district’s director of school nutrition, told the board the division is expanding partnerships with Shenandoah Valley farmers and is promoting Farm to School Week with demonstrations and on-site events. “This week is Farm to School Week, and we worked hard to involve more farmers and more community partners this year,” Yutze said, noting apples from Showalter’s Orchard in Timberville and a tractor and petting zoo scheduled for a school visit.
Yutze said the nutrition team aims to increase local fresh produce on daily menus and stressed the educational goal: “Our nutrition program views school lunch as an opportunity to introduce new foods, and to reinforce the idea that healthy eating can be delicious, fun, and support academic success.” Board members and students joined a brief apple “crunch” to highlight the campaign; Superintendent Richards and the board thanked the nutrition staff and invited the public to observe related events during National School Lunch Week.
