Resident urges Solon to act on roaming barn cats, citing disease and wildlife impacts

Robyn Jackson told the Town of Solon Board on Nov. 18 that roaming and barn cats in the town pose public-health and ecological risks and asked the board to consider local measures and resident education. "She has seen laws in other towns that have regulations on cats and wants to know what the town can do to help get the local population of cats protected and education for residents on their responsibility for barn cats on their property," Jackson said, and handed the board printed materials with examples from other municipalities.
Shawn Reed thanked Jackson and asked whether she had specific suggestions; Jackson said the SPCA had told her it could not assist with the issue and that she plans to raise the matter at county and state levels if local remedies are insufficient. Another resident, Larry Jackson, described a nearby farmhouse on Route 41 where animals roam and said his household vaccinates and leashes pets but remains concerned about exposure from wandering cats. The board said it would review the materials and look for ways to provide education to residents about vaccination and ownership responsibilities.
