Don Moore, district library coordinator, told the board that district libraries recorded 79,056 visits last year and more than 75,000 physical checkouts across seven buildings. Moore said the distribution included roughly 50,000 fiction and 25,000 nonfiction checkouts (excluding digital circulation) and that the average collection age remains a focus for future renewal.
"This year, we recorded a remarkable 79,056 total district library visits," Moore said during the presentation. He highlighted two Blair Grants that funded furniture and books for district libraries, 12 book fairs that expanded collections, and a cross-district reallocation of furniture and materials to optimize learning spaces. The board discussed vendor practices—particularly Scholastic’s packing processes and content vetting—and asked staff about safeguards. Library staff said each book is reviewed by librarians before shelving and that alternatives to Scholastic (such as Literati) had been considered.
Following the discussion the board moved to approve fall and spring book fairs at each district PK–8 building; the motion passed. Staff agreed to continue vetting vendors and to provide clearer public explanations of book-fair review practices.
