Town officials describe ongoing cleanup after Hattertown Road fuel spill

The First Selectman reported that on Wednesday, Aug. 3 a rollover involving an oil truck on Hattertown Road triggered an immediate response from the Department of Public Works, fire and EMS and a HAZMAT remediation contractor. "This cleanup effort has been ongoing now for a week, and I've been on-site several times a day monitoring progress," the First Selectman said during the council meeting.
Officials said the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) was on scene and that a company-conducted remediation plan is under way; the town’s engineers are designing a replacement plan for the area to be restored once oil and emulsified residues are removed from the wetlands. The First Selectman warned the timeline is unclear but advised residents to prepare for about three more weeks of road closure and said so far there have been "very little inconvenience and no interruption of service reported" for mail, garbage or school buses. The town has been coordinating with neighboring towns and monitoring potential impacts to bus routes and other services.
