Chesapeake reports mostly stable SOL pass rates, flags slight dip in math and new state cut scores

Dr. Joppa presented divisionwide Standards of Learning (SOL) pass-rate results and accreditation status, telling the board that most content areas equaled or exceeded last year's performance, with growth in reading, science and history and a slight decrease in math.
"We saw growth in reading, science, and history with a slight decrease in math," Dr. Joppa said, adding that pass-rate data contributes to the "mastery" component of the accountability framework and that other measures (growth and readiness) are still pending. He noted the division submitted its accreditation survey to the state and expects required evidence to be approved for compliance.
Dr. Joppa also summarized forthcoming changes: the Virginia Board of Education approved higher cut scores phased in starting in the 2026–27 school year — he cited reading at approximately 479, Algebra I at about 453, and Geometry at about 443 — and said graduating-class protections and a multiyear rollout will be used while additional reports become available. The division will return with comparisons to state data once it is released.
