Iowa City Area Sports Commission reports record bookings and projected visitor spending

Josh Yammer, president of the Iowa City Area Sports Commission, presented the commission’s annual report to the council and described the group's work promoting events across the region, including North Liberty. “We are the official marketing organization for Iowa City, Coralville, North Liberty, University Heights,” Yammer said, describing the commission’s role in sales, marketing and placemaking.
Yammer gave summary figures for past and future activity: last year the commission serviced 67 groups with about 93,000 visitors who spent just under $19 million in the community. He said future bookings include roughly 61 conferences and 42 sporting events that together could generate about 145,000 visitors, 41,000 room nights and approximately $38 million in future direct spending. He highlighted major upcoming events including the Pan American championships, which will bring international competitors and logistical work such as visa coordination.
Yammer noted the commission’s primary funding comes from hotel‑motel tax pass‑through dollars and said North Liberty’s single existing hotel limits the city’s share of revenue; he encouraged continued local cooperation on tourism and event planning.
