Trane and the design team described how the geothermal system will be implemented on campus. They said the wells are small, vertical boreholes (two-inch conduits), spaced about 25 feet on center, and routed to a manifold box so a smaller number of combined pipes enter the building.
“They're vertical wells, so they go down 502… it's a, 2 inch, conduit,” the Trane representative said, describing the well geometry and noting piping and components will be hidden below grade and regraded and reseeded after installation. Presenters emphasized the test well already drilled will become one of the wells in the full field.
Contractors said site work will require some concrete cutting and temporary disturbance (openings in sidewalks, a hole in a side wall to route piping), but they plan to minimize tree impacts and keep most disruptive drilling to the summer. Classroom conversions of unit ventilators and other work will be phased wing by wing to avoid long-term displacement; teams estimated a typical in-school outage of about a week for small sets of classrooms while major work would be scheduled in summer months.
