Resident asks council to find lower-cost street assessment and prioritize repairs

During the budget public hearing, Kim Whatley urged the council to consider a lower-cost option for the proposed street-condition assessment and to reallocate any savings to additional street and sidewalk repairs.
"My hope was that we can discuss maybe a lower cost method of doing that assessment so we can spend the extra, the difference of money onto street repair," Whatley said, adding that residents talk frequently about streets and sidewalks and that she would prefer funds go toward more repairs. She also expressed support for the Memory Lane Road project and said she looks forward to the sports-complex improvements, including batting-cage turf replacement.
An audience member asked whether batting cages had been cut from the budget; staff confirmed the turf and batting-cage replacement are scheduled in the current fiscal year and expected to occur over the next four weeks. The request to explore lower-cost assessment methods will be one topic for staff and council as they finalize the line-item budget ahead of the Aug. 24 continuation.
