Council told vacancies rose to 42; director says some posts await requisitions

Councilwoman Jeanette Blackwell told the Common Council she counted 42 vacant positions in city government during the Jan. 6 workshop, seven more than a mayoral report noted roughly two months earlier.
"So if I count it correctly this evening, I counted 42 vacant positions," Blackwell said. Director Richardson said his most recent internal report had shown 25 to 30 vacancies and explained that some positions remain open because the department heads have not submitted requisitions to backfill.
Council members said the increase is notable and has fiscal implications when combined with the classification and compensation study; they asked staff to provide more detailed vacancy lists by department during the budget process. Richardson said he would provide updated details where available and reiterated that the council will have the final authority to accept or reject new job descriptions and any associated pay-plan changes.
