Shelter Island board moves to approve $25,000 for targeted water testing

The board agreed to place a resolution on the Feb. 2 agenda to spend $25,000 of WQI funds for focused individual water testing in the town center; the WAC told the board this round would test a broader suite of contaminants and will be managed differently than prior rounds.
The Town Board agreed to advance a plan to use $25,000 in Water Quality Initiative (WQI) funds to pay for individual water testing centered in the town core. Town staff said legal counsel and the WAC have reviewed whether this is an allowable use of WQI funds and concluded it is.
One board member said past testing rounds delivered limited actionable results for flagged properties; WAC members and other supporters said this program will be run differently this time and will include a more comprehensive panel of emerging contaminants, not just nitrates and nitrites. "I think this is critical," a board member said in support of moving the expenditure forward. The board agreed to place a resolution on the Feb. 2 agenda to approve the expenditure and asked the advisory board to review protocols once formed.
Town staff explained the WAC is coordinating with county testing vendors to secure more comprehensive panels at better value and that any implementation will depend on final IMA language being adopted among the participating towns.
