Project 2 near‑complete but contractor now projects September/October turnover

The Committee of the Whole received a detailed construction update on Project 2 and was shown progress photos of interior finishes. A project representative reported that the building is enclosed, glazing is installed, major mechanical startups have begun and many interior finishes (lockers, corridors, bathrooms) are substantially complete. "So, we are projecting 90%... To date, we build or put in a work in place about 82," the presenter said.
Despite the visible progress, the contractor told the board that the previously announced substantial‑completion date of Aug. 19 is no longer realistic. The contractor said manpower shortages, humidity and conditioning problems that affect hardwood and flooring installation, and the timing of door deliveries have pushed the practical turnover window. "We don't wanna rush finishes. We don't wanna mess quality... So that is why we are extending out," the presenter told the board.
Board members pressed about operational impacts. Administration said most fall sports are outdoors, reducing immediate disruption, but the girls' swim program is the primary curricular/extracurricular concern. The district and the swim coach are exploring temporary arrangements with partner pools and other schools; administration noted existing relationships with Harvey and with the park district for contingency hosting if needed.
Contractors described remaining punch‑list tasks (final millwork, door hanging, ceiling tiles, gym floor finish, pool testing) and said they will turn on air conditioning in coordination with continued installation activity. The board heard that the district is tracking remaining contingencies and allowances but that the budget remains generally in line with prior expectations.
