Council appoints Jane Brooke Markel to vacant Ward 1 seat; she takes oath

Mayor Thurston presented Jane Brooke Markel as the council’s recommended candidate to fill the Ward 1 seat vacated by former councilman Blake Bai and asked for a motion to appoint her. A council member moved to accept Markel, a second was made, and the motion carried.
Markel was sworn in at the front of the room by City Clerk Paige Yoder. In the oath she said, “do solemnly swear that I will support the constitution of The United States,” after which the mayor welcomed her to the council and tasked her with meeting staff and attending orientation. The council then proceeded to the consent agenda.
