A district staff member presented current performance data to the Coquille SD 8 board and warned the metrics put the district at risk under the state's new accountability law. She said the district's 3rd-grade ELA score is about 40%, roughly the state average, but 8th-grade math proficiency is about 13% compared to a state average of 27%.
"If you look at our 3rd grade, ELA scores, you can see that we're at 40%, which is the state average," the staff member said. She went on to report additional gaps: a 9th-grade 'on-track' rate of 63% versus a state average of 85%, on-time graduation of 37% versus 81% statewide, and a five-year graduation rate of 58% against a state 87% benchmark.
The staff member said the 8th-grade math requirement is a newly emphasized metric under the law and that raising those scores will take time. She recommended steps including targeted hiring of qualified middle-grade math teachers and schedule changes to support freshmen, both intended to boost on-track and graduation measures.
