Captain Afton Alvin, captain with the Los Gatos–Monte Sereno Police Department, gave the council a semiannual operations update, saying the department saw a combined applicant pool of 768 candidates across the two jurisdictions and stressing the complexity of the hiring pipeline. "You would submit your written application... then there's a background process, which can take weeks or months," Alvin said, describing written applications, oral boards, backgrounds, polygraph and medical exams and academy training as stages of the process.
Alvin also described community engagement and volunteer programs in Monte Sereno, citing specific local counts: one of four explorers, two new CERT members and one DART volunteer, plus 450 combined volunteer hours, 188 vacation checks, and 43 welcome packets during the six-month reporting period. "The explorers are really a fantastic opportunity for young adults," Alvin said, urging residents to contact Jackie Rose for volunteer opportunities. The captain said these programs both build recruitment pipelines and strengthen community ties.
