Central Square board discusses failed budget, misinformation and plans for revote

Board Vice President Kristy Fischmann told the school board on May 21 that community members have asked for a revote after the district’s budget failed and that the board has heard concerns about misinformation circulating in the community. "No one is getting a 13% raise. The raises were 4% for all bargaining units across the board and this is a negotiated process that cannot be changed," Fischmann said, stressing that pay increases were negotiated and not the source of the reported 13 percent figure.
The board acknowledged that the failed budget will necessitate cuts to some programs and staff if a revote does not pass, but members said they want to preserve educational services. Board President Steven Patch said he would not support cuts to BOCES programs and Allison Douglas agreed. Patch also said he had written to the Governor and Assemblyman Barclay to register the board’s displeasure at the 2% aid the district received. Board members said they expect a budget vote percentage in the 3–5 percent range if the matter returns to voters and set polling hours for any revote at 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
